Things to do nearGoat Island

Goat Island sits in the Niagara River at Niagara Falls, New York, separated from the mainland by narrow channels and connected by bridges within Niagara Falls State Park, the oldest state park in the United States. The island has been a destination for curious travelers since the early nineteenth century, when visitors first crossed by boat to stand near the brink.

The island gives access to several distinct overlooks. A short walk leads to the American Falls, where you can stand at the railing and look straight down into the churning pool below. Paths along the western shore offer sweeping views of the much wider Horseshoe Falls across the border.

One of the most memorable experiences available from Goat Island is Cave of the Winds, a guided attraction that takes you down into the gorge via elevator and along wooden walkways to within feet of Bridal Veil Falls. The roar and spray at that distance is genuinely overwhelming in the best way.

The island also offers quieter pleasures: shaded picnic areas, benches overlooking the upper rapids, and a sense of being suspended between two nations at one of the great natural wonders of the world. Few places let you stand so close to so much raw power.
