North Dome rises to about 7,542 feet along the northern rim of Yosemite Valley, formed by the same glacial forces that shaped the entire range of granite domes across the Sierra Nevada. Unlike many summits that look down on their neighbors from a distance, North Dome sits almost perfectly opposite Half Dome, giving hikers a face-to-face encounter with that famous silhouette that no valley viewpoint can replicate.

The standard approach from Porcupine Creek passes through mixed conifer forest before the trees thin and open granite takes over. Along the way, a short detour leads to Indian Rock, a natural arch that adds geological variety to the outing. The final approach across open slabs is straightforward and the summit is broad enough to spread out and linger.

From the top, the full sweep of Royal Arches is visible directly below, their curved exfoliation bands reading clearly against the valley walls. On clear days, Clouds Rest dominates the eastern skyline, its long ridge stretching above Tenaya Canyon.
