Things to do nearOld North Church

Old North Church is Boston's oldest surviving church, renowned for its role in Paul Revere's midnight ride and its commanding presence in the city's North End neighborhood in Massachusetts.

Old North Church, formally known as Christ Church in the City of Boston, was built in 1723 and remains the oldest surviving church building in the city. Designed in the style of Sir Christopher Wren, the structure features a graceful red-brick exterior and a white interior filled with original box pews, each numbered and assigned to colonial-era families who paid for their use. The church's bells, cast in 1744, were among the first in the American colonies, and a young Paul Revere was once part of the bell-ringing guild here.

On the evening of April 18, 1775, church sexton Robert Newman climbed the steeple and hung two lanterns to signal that British troops were moving by sea toward Lexington and Concord, a moment that set Paul Revere's midnight ride in motion and helped ignite the American Revolution.

Today, visitors can walk the central aisle, examine the period furnishings, and read the memorial tablets that line the walls. The adjacent garden contains a quiet churchyard where colonial Bostonians are buried, and a small museum space near the entrance offers context on the church's history and congregation.

The surrounding North End neighborhood, Boston's oldest residential district, adds further texture to any visit, with narrow streets, old brick buildings, and a strong Italian-American culinary tradition. Old North Church endures as a place where architecture, faith, and political history converge in a single, quietly powerful space.

    1

Visit on a weekday morning to explore the interior with smaller crowds and better access to the original box pews.

    2

Climb the steeple tour for a close look at the bells and a view over the North End rooftops that few visitors experience.

    3

Walk the Freedom Trail before arriving so the church's place in the broader revolutionary narrative feels fully grounded.

    4

Try a meal at one of the long-standing Italian restaurants on Hanover Street, just a short walk from the church.

    5

Pick up a copy of Longfellow's poem 'Paul Revere's Ride' before your visit to bring the lantern signal story to life as you stand inside.
