Playa Tortuga sits on Culebrita, a tiny uninhabited islet just off the eastern tip of Culebra in Puerto Rico. The islet is part of the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge, a designation that has kept its beaches and reefs in remarkable condition. The beach earns its name from the hawksbill and green sea turtles that feed and rest in its protected cove. The coral is healthy by regional standards, making this one of the more rewarding spots for snorkeling in the Puerto Rican island chain.

Nearby, Culebrita also holds a nineteenth-century lighthouse and a series of natural tidal pools called Las Jacuzzis, carved into the rock on the island's northern shore. Visitors often combine Playa Tortuga with a walk to those pools and a look at the old lighthouse for a full day on the islet.
