The Presidio of San Francisco has served as a military installation under three flags: Spanish, Mexican, and American. Established in 1776, it is one of the oldest continuously operated military posts in the country, transferred to the National Park Service in 1994 as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

The Main Post anchors the historic core, where restored barracks and officers' quarters now house museums, galleries, and community spaces.
