The Elbow sits within John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the first undersea park in the United States, and its position at a slight curve in the reef tract is precisely what makes it so productive for divers and snorkelers. Depths range from about 10 to 25 feet, making The Elbow accessible to beginners while still rewarding experienced underwater explorers with layered ledges and swim-throughs.

Several historic wrecks lie scattered across the sandy bottom here, the most notable being the remains of Civil War-era vessels and later cargo ships that misjudged the reef in the days before reliable navigation. The wreckage now serves as artificial reef structure, draped in encrusting corals and sponges and patrolled by snapper, grouper, and moray eels. Snorkelers find the site equally rewarding, since much of the most colorful coral growth sits in the shallower zones where sunlight penetrates easily. Brain corals, star corals, and sea fans sway in the gentle surge alongside clouds of yellowtail and damselfish. Nearby, the iconic underwater statue known as Christ of the Deep adds a cultural landmark to the broader reef experience. The Elbow remains one of the Florida Keys' most complete dive destinations.
