Join if you are age 6+ (minors must be with an adult). You should feel comfortable walking short distances on uneven terrain, including stairs and low ceilings in Nāhuku (Thurston) Lava Tube. The tour is not wheelchair accessible and is not recommended for travelers with back problems, heart problems, or other serious medical conditions.
Wear sturdy, completely closed-toe shoes (sneakers or hiking boots). Open-toed shoes (sandals or flip-flops) may get you excluded from walking portions on uneven terrain and lava fields.
Bring warm layers and personal waterproof outer layers. For Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, pack long pants, a long-sleeved top or jacket, a hat, and an extra set of clothes in case of airborne volcanic ash or “Pele’s hair” (fine, glass-like fibers) exposure.
Standing at the rim of Kīlauea, one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, you feel the ground warm beneath your feet and catch the sulfurous drift of volcanic gases rising from the caldera below. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park stretches across nearly 330,000 acres of the Big Island, encompassing steaming vents, hardened lava fields, and lush rainforest that gives way abruptly to barren black rock. This is a place where the planet's interior announces itself without apology, and where Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park earns its reputation as one of the most geologically dynamic destinations in the United States.
