Travel from sea level to the slopes of Maunakea to admire the Hawaiian night sky. Enjoy a picnic dinner, sunset views, and stargazing with telescopes.
Minimum age is 13. Due to high altitude, this tour is not permitted for pregnant guests or those with respiratory, circulatory, or heart conditions, and for anyone who has SCUBA dived within the past 24 hours. Summit access may close without warning due to weather.
What kind of telescope is used for stargazing?
We utilize an 11" Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope and a digital telescope to view and photograph deep space objects.
What is the guide to guest ratio?
Our maximum guide-to-guest ratio is 1:12.
How many guests do you take up per night?
Our permit allows for a maximum of 2 vehicles per night.
Do you operate the tour every night?
We go every night, weather permitting.
Are children allowed on this tour?
Children under 13 are not permitted on this tour.
Is there much walking or hiking on this tour?
There is approximately 150 yards of walking; rated as easy.
Will I be able to hike and explore the summit on my own?
Due to safety and permitting restrictions, guests must stay near guides and vehicles and cannot explore the summit on their own before sunset.
How can I plan around specific astronomical events?
Check for upcoming astronomical events and whether they will be observable in the Hawaiian sky.
