Standing along the Chilkat River flats near Haines, Alaska, you are surrounded by cottonwood groves alive with the calls and wingbeats of hundreds of bald eagles. The Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve protects roughly 48,000 acres of river bottom and upland forest where an underground reservoir of warm water keeps sections of the river ice-free through winter. That open water draws late-season salmon, and the salmon draw the eagles in extraordinary numbers. The Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve is most famous for its autumn congregation, when thousands of eagles gather here in one of nature's most arresting wildlife spectacles.
Started the day off 6/12/24 with some rafting in Haines. We got beautiful weather 65* sunny. Got to see some bald eagles and nest and a brown bear on our drive to the put in. What amazing sights and a cool place. Would definitely make it a must do for our next trip. The guides went above and beyond with making it a stress free experience with loads of history and information about the river the mountains and Haines itself. The only thing that could have made it better is if we could go again during the salmon run it was just a bit too early for them. No need to be afraid of the tour it’s totally calm. Haines was definitely our favorite place of our entire cruise.
