Diamond Head is a volcanic crater landmark on Oahu, Hawaii, celebrated for its panoramic coastal views, rich military history, and rewarding hiking trail.
Diamond Head earned its English name in the nineteenth century when British sailors mistook calcite crystals glinting on the crater's slopes for diamonds. The formation itself is far older, the result of a single explosive volcanic eruption roughly 300,000 years ago that left behind a tuff cone now preserved as a state monument. Hawaiians knew it as Leahi, a name that likely refers to the brow of a tuna, describing the crater's distinctive ridge profile as seen from the sea.
The United States military recognized the strategic value of Diamond Head early in the twentieth century, constructing a network of tunnels, fire control stations, and observation posts inside and along the crater rim. These fortifications, built during World War I and expanded through World War II, are still visible on the trail today, and passing through the dim concrete tunnels and up the spiral staircase to a former military bunker is one of the hike's most memorable moments.
The summit trail covers roughly 1.6 miles round trip and climbs about 560 feet in elevation. The path is well-maintained and clearly marked, passing through open scrubland before entering the tunnel system near the top. At the summit lookout, the view takes in the full arc of Waikiki's shoreline, the Koolau Range inland, and on clear days the neighboring island of Molokai on the horizon.
Diamond Head remains one of the most visited natural landmarks in Hawaii for good reason. It offers genuine natural and historical depth within a short distance of one of the world's most famous beach resorts, making it a worthwhile destination in its own right.
Visit during the early morning hours, ideally before 8 a.m., to beat the heat and secure parking inside the crater before the lot fills.
Bring at least one liter of water per person, as there is no water available on the trail and the exposed terrain can feel significantly warmer than the coast.
Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes, since the trail includes steep staircases, uneven lava rock, and a narrow spiral staircase inside a military observation bunker.
Pause at the summit pillbox on the left before the main lookout for a quieter vantage point and a slightly different angle on the Waikiki skyline.
Combine your visit with a stop at Kapiolani Park at the base of Diamond Head for a shaded rest, local food trucks, and views back up at the crater rim.
