The Hillsborough River has shaped the Tampa Bay region for centuries. Indigenous Tocobaga people fished and traveled its waters long before Spanish explorers arrived in the 1500s, and the river later served as a vital supply route during the Second Seminole War, when Fort Foster was established along its banks. That fort site is preserved today within Hillsborough River State Park, where visitors can tour a reconstructed stockade and walk trails through old-growth hammock.

Above the state park, the upper river winds through the Green Swamp, a vast freshwater watershed that feeds much of west-central Florida. Here the Hillsborough River earns its reputation as one of the finest kayaking destinations in the state, with narrow channels threading between bald cypress knees and resurrection ferns. Birding is exceptional throughout, with limpkins, barred owls, and swallow-tailed kites appearing seasonally.

As the river approaches Tampa, its character shifts. Riverside parks and paved trails line the banks, and the waterway eventually joins the urban fabric near the Tampa Riverwalk, where the river meets downtown before emptying into Tampa Bay. The Hillsborough River rewards visitors who take time to explore its full length, from silent wilderness to vibrant city waterfront.
