Horseshoe Falls straddles the international boundary between Ontario and the state of New York, though the Canadian shore has long offered the most dramatic frontal view of the cataract. The falls were shaped over thousands of years as glacial meltwater carved through layers of dolostone and shale, and the lip continues to erode slowly, a geological process that has moved the brink several kilometres upstream over the millennia.

From Queen Victoria Park on the Ontario side, you can stand within arm's reach of the railing as the river accelerates and disappears over the edge. Boat tours depart from both shores and carry passengers directly into the mist at the base of the falls, a perspective that makes the scale impossible to intellectualize. Nearby, Goat Island provides walking paths that thread between the American and Canadian cataracts, while the Cave of the Winds attraction brings visitors to the base of Bridal Veil Falls just metres from the surge.

The surrounding area has drawn tourists since the early nineteenth century, and the town of Niagara Falls retains a lively, well-worn character built entirely around the spectacle. Restaurants and observation decks line the parkway, and the American Falls sit just downstream, completing a natural tableau that rewards a full day of exploration. Horseshoe Falls is one of those rare places where the reality exceeds the photographs.
