Established in 1970 as Alaska's first state park, Kachemak Bay State Park protects more than 400,000 acres of coastline, mountain terrain, and marine habitat on the south side of Kachemak Bay. The park was created in recognition of the area's extraordinary ecological richness, where cold nutrient-dense waters support halibut, salmon, sea otters, and vast seabird colonies.

Hikers find a network of trails ranging from gentle coastal walks to demanding alpine climbs. The approach to Grewingk Glacier is a highlight, leading through forest before opening onto a glacial outwash plain where the ice face looms close enough to hear it creak. Kayaking the protected coves and sea stacks rewards paddlers with harbor seal sightings and intimate views of the rocky shoreline.
