The land was considered sacred, a place where high-ranking ali'i, or chiefs, brought their newborn children to be raised, and its name translates roughly to 'long back,' a reference to the ridgeline that frames the valley. The remnants of a traditional loko i'a, or fishpond, are still visible near the shoreline, offering a tangible connection to the aquaculture practices that sustained communities here long before Western contact.

Today the county-managed park draws visitors with a wide, flat lawn that runs down to a calm, shallow beach ideal for wading and swimming, particularly for children. The view from the shore takes in Mokolii Island rising from the bay and the dramatic green ridges of the Ko'olau Range, a combination that has made this coastline one of the most recognizable in the Hawaiian Islands and a frequent backdrop for film productions. Picnic facilities and restrooms make it comfortable for a full day outdoors, and the grassy expanse gives plenty of room to spread out.
