Lake Keowee sits at the heart of the South Carolina Upstate, a region shaped by Cherokee history and later by the ambitions of Duke Energy, which created the reservoir in the early 1970s to support the Oconee Nuclear Station. The flooded valley submerged portions of land long sacred to the Cherokee people, including the site of the original Keowee town. That layered past gives the lake a quiet depth beyond its famously blue water.

On the surface, the lake rewards nearly every kind of outdoor pursuit. Anglers target largemouth and smallmouth bass in the rocky coves, while water-skiers and wakeboarders take advantage of the wide main channel. Kayaking is especially rewarding here — the sheltered inlets along the northern shore see little boat traffic, and the forested ridgelines reflected in the clear water make for memorable paddling. You can also find good spots for fishing charters operating out of the broader Upstate region.

The land surrounding Lake Keowee is laced with trails. A short drive brings you to High Falls County Park, where a pretty waterfall and riverside paths make for an easy half-day outing. Keowee-Toxaway State Park, hugging the lake's eastern shore, offers additional hiking and a small natural history exhibit focused on Cherokee culture.
