Lombard Street earned its reputation as the crookedest street in the world, though that title is technically contested by Potrero Hill's Vermont Street. The Russian Hill block between Hyde and Leavenworth Streets was redesigned in 1922 to reduce its original 27-degree grade to something cars could manage. The solution was a series of eight brick-paved switchbacks that have since become one of San Francisco's most enduring symbols.

Visitors approach from two directions. Drivers queue at the top on Hyde Street and navigate slowly downhill while pedestrians take the flanking staircases at their own pace, stopping to admire the seasonal plantings. The hydrangeas are the stars of the garden, replaced periodically with other flowering plants to keep the beds colorful across the year.

The surrounding Russian Hill neighborhood rewards those who linger. Nearby, Coit Tower rises above Telegraph Hill, and the Filbert Steps offer a peaceful descent through terraced cottage gardens. A short ride on the Powell and Hyde Cable Car connects the hill to Fisherman's Wharf below.

Lombard Street is one of those rare urban landmarks that rewards a second look, offering something different depending on the season, the light, and how slowly you choose to move through it.
