Visit during low tide for the best shelling, when the flats expose a wide variety of intact specimens along the southern tip of the island.

Bring reef-safe sunscreen, plenty of water, and shade of your own, as Shell Key Preserve has no facilities, concessions, or permanent structures onshore.

Arrive by mid-morning to secure a comfortable spot on the beach before day-trip boats from the St. Pete Beach and Tierra Verde areas bring heavier crowds in the afternoon.
