The Sunshine Skyway Bridge has defined the entrance to Tampa Bay since its current cable-stayed incarnation opened in 1987, replacing an earlier span that was struck by a freighter in 1980. At roughly four miles long, it carries Interstate 275 between St. Petersburg to the north and Palmetto to the south, functioning as a critical transportation corridor and a genuine architectural landmark. The design, with its sweeping yellow cables fanning from a central tower, has made it one of the most photographed bridges in the United States and a symbol of the Tampa Bay region.

The old bridge sections that survived the 1980 collision were converted into fishing piers managed by Florida State Parks, giving anglers direct access to some of the most productive waters in the Gulf of Mexico. Visitors who are not driving can walk or cycle the dedicated path that runs along the bridge deck, offering an unencumbered view across the bay toward the St. Petersburg skyline and the open Gulf beyond.

The surrounding waters are a habitat for bottlenose dolphins, manatees, and a variety of game fish, making the area a draw for naturalists as well as anglers.
