Things to do nearTorre Yokahú

Torre Yokahú is a stone observation tower in El Yunque National Forest, Puerto Rico, offering sweeping views of the rainforest, the Atlantic coast, and distant Caribbean islands.

Torre Yokahú sits within El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest System. The tower itself was constructed in the 1930s as part of a New Deal-era effort to build recreational infrastructure across the country, and its sturdy mortared-stone construction has weathered decades of tropical storms while remaining open to visitors.

From the open-air platform at the top, the view stretches across an unbroken canopy of tabonuco and sierra palm toward the Atlantic coast. On exceptionally clear days you can pick out the outline of islands to the east. The ascent takes only a few minutes, but the perspective it offers of the forest's sheer scale is difficult to replicate anywhere else on the island.

The tower stands near several trailheads, making it a natural anchor for a half-day in the forest. Birdwatchers regularly spot the endangered Puerto Rican parrot and the melodic coqui frog is audible throughout. After descending, many visitors continue north toward Luquillo Beach to trade the forest shade for the coast. Torre Yokahú earns its place as one of Puerto Rico's most rewarding short stops.

    Tips for visiting Torre Yokahú

    1

Visit early in the morning, ideally before 9 a.m., when skies over El Yunque are clearest and crowds are thinnest.

    2

Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good grip, as the stone steps inside the tower can be slick from moisture.

    3

Bring water and a light rain jacket, since the rainforest weather shifts quickly and afternoon showers are common.

    4

Pair the tower visit with a short hike on a nearby forest trail to fully appreciate the ecosystem you are looking out over.

    5

Arrive on a weekday if possible, as the tower and the surrounding area along PR-191 see noticeably heavier foot traffic on weekends.
