Castillo San Cristóbal in San Juan, Puerto Rico is a massive 18th-century Spanish fortress offering sweeping ocean views, layered tunnels, and centuries of colonial history.
Castillo San Cristóbal was constructed by the Spanish beginning in the early 18th century to defend San Juan from land-based attacks coming from the east. Unlike El Morro, which guarded the harbor entrance, San Cristóbal was designed as an elaborate system of independent defensive zones connected by tunnels and ramps, covering roughly 27 acres at its peak.
Visitors today can explore five levels of the fort, moving from the main plaza down into storage rooms and up to artillery platforms with unobstructed views of the Atlantic and the city rooftops below. The network of tunnels and the preserved moat system give a genuine sense of the fort's defensive logic.
The U.S. National Park Service manages Castillo San Cristóbal as part of San Juan National Historic Site, and rangers offer informative talks throughout the day. Exhibits inside the fort trace the site's history from Spanish colonial rule through the American period.
