East End Beach sits at the foot of the Eastern Promenade in Portland, Maine, tucked below one of the city's most beloved green spaces. The beach itself is modest in size, a narrow crescent of sand and smooth stones where the freshwater runoff from the promenade meets the tidal reaches of Casco Bay. Portland has long oriented itself around this working harbor, and East End Beach offers one of the most accessible and unhurried places to take in that relationship between city and sea.

The Eastern Promenade above the beach was developed in the late nineteenth century as part of a broader effort to give Portland residents a graceful public parkway along the waterfront bluff. Walking the promenade trail today, you pass mature trees, open lawns, and a series of viewpoints looking out over the bay and its constellation of islands, including Peaks Island, which is reachable by ferry from the nearby terminal.

On the beach itself, visitors swim in the calm shallows during summer, launch kayaks and paddleboards, and gather at picnic areas shaded by the hillside above. The surrounding neighborhood, Munjoy Hill, is one of Portland's most characterful, lined with nineteenth-century wooden homes and independent cafes and shops within easy walking distance.

East End Beach rewards those who come without a fixed agenda, content to watch the harbor traffic, feel the bay breeze, and take in a stretch of Maine coastline that feels genuinely local and largely unchanged.
