The intersection of Broad and Meeting streets in Charleston, South Carolina, has carried the nickname Four Corners of Law since at least the early twentieth century, when it was popularized to describe the remarkable concentration of governing authority on one block. Each corner represents a distinct sphere of law: the federal government in the old Post Office and Federal Court building, the state in the Charleston County Courthouse, the county in City Hall, and the divine in St. Michael's Church.
St. Michael's, consecrated in 1761, is the oldest surviving church building in Charleston and a centerpiece of the intersection. Its white steeple has oriented sailors and residents alike for more than two and a half centuries. Across the street, Charleston City Hall dates to 1801 and houses a celebrated portrait gallery on its second floor.
