The Hana Highway on Maui's northeastern coast winds through rainforest, past cascading waterfalls, and along dramatic sea cliffs to the remote town of Hana.
The Hana Highway, also known as Highway 360, follows an ancient Hawaiian coastal path that was paved into a modern road in the early twentieth century. It crosses more than 50 bridges, many of them original concrete spans from the 1910s, and passes through communities that have maintained strong Native Hawaiian traditions for generations.
Drivers pass waterfalls spilling directly onto the roadside, trail heads leading into the West Maui Mountains, and taro fields still farmed in the traditional way at Keanae Peninsula. Garden of Eden Arboretum and Puaa Kaa State Wayside Park offer easy stops with lush scenery and freshwater pools.
Hana town itself rewards the journey with the Hasegawa General Store, Hana Cultural Center, and the serene Hamoa Beach nearby. The road continuing past Hana toward Kipahulu leads to the Oheo Gulch pools within Haleakala National Park.
The Hana Highway is one of the most scenic drives in the United States, offering a rare combination of natural beauty, cultural depth, and a genuine sense of discovery that makes the long drive entirely worthwhile.
