Kuwohi, formerly known as Clingmans Dome, reclaimed its original Cherokee name in 2024, restoring a title that translates roughly to 'mulberry place' in the Tsalagi language. The peak sits entirely within Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited national park in the country, yet the summit retains a sense of remove that few places at this elevation can match.

The half-mile paved path from the parking area is steep but manageable, rising through a dense canopy of Fraser fir and red spruce. At the top, the iconic concrete observation tower spirals upward like a flying saucer, a mid-century structure that has become an emblem of the park. On the clearest days, views stretch into seven states.

The surrounding forest is a sky island ecosystem, more closely related to the boreal forests of Canada than to the hardwood coves below. Birders come specifically for red-crossbills and other species rare at southern latitudes. Newfound Gap, just a short drive away, connects to the Appalachian Trail and adds a natural extension to any visit.

Kuwohi is closed to vehicles in winter, but the trail remains open to those willing to hike in, rewarding them with a frosted, often fog-wrapped landscape entirely unlike the summer scene. Few peaks in the Appalachians combine ecological richness, cultural depth, and sheer visual drama so completely.
