Faro Cabezas de San Juan sits within the Reserva Natural Las Cabezas de San Juan, a protected area managed by the Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico. The lighthouse itself was built by the Spanish in 1882 using a distinctive neogothic ironwork design, making it one of the most architecturally striking structures on the island. Its Fresnel lens still functions, a rare distinction among Puerto Rico's historic lighthouses.

Guided tours wind through seven ecosystems packed into roughly 316 acres: dry forest, mangrove lagoons, coral reefs, seagrass beds, sandy beaches, rocky cliffs, and open ocean. The on-site natural history museum inside the lighthouse building displays marine charts, navigational instruments, and exhibits on the coastal ecology that surrounds you. Just 0.8 km from the reserve, Laguna Grande offers kayaking through one of the world's most vivid bioluminescent bays after dark.

The headland's position makes it a superb vantage point for watching pelicans, frigatebirds, and migratory species. Offshore, the cays visible from the lighthouse tower draw snorkelers and day-trippers; Icacos Beach lies fewer than three kilometers away by water.
