The castle's Scots baronial design was largely his own invention, and its walls once held an enormous stockpile of surplus ammunition and equipment. A 1920 explosion damaged much of the structure, and decades of neglect have since softened its edges into something closer to a romantic ruin.

Access is managed through seasonal guided tours, which depart by boat and include walks among the overgrown grounds. The tours cover the island's history, the Bannerman family story, and ongoing preservation efforts. Boat tours on the Hudson are a natural companion to any visit, offering striking views of the castle from the water before you set foot on shore.
