Bannerman Castle takes its name from Francis Bannerman VI, a Brooklyn arms dealer who purchased Pollepel Island in 1900 to store surplus military equipment. He designed the elaborate Scottish-inspired structures himself, blending a warehouse with the aesthetic of a medieval fortress. Construction continued until his death in 1918, leaving the island a layered, eccentric monument to one man's ambition.

A 1920 explosion of stored ammunition damaged much of the complex, and a 1969 fire accelerated the decay. Today the Bannerman Castle Trust manages the island, offering guided boat tours and kayak excursions that bring visitors ashore to walk the grounds and hear the full story of the site's rise and ruin.

From the island, the views up and down the Hudson River are among the most striking in the valley. The Highlands frame the horizon, and the quiet of the river contrasts with the dramatic silhouette of the walls. Photographers find compelling compositions at nearly every angle.
