Tunnel View has anchored the Yosemite experience since the Wawona Tunnel opened in 1933. The overlook was designed intentionally so that drivers emerging from the tunnel would meet the valley's full grandeur head-on, a tradition that has drawn photographers, painters, and travelers for decades.

From the paved overlook you can trace the valley's entire western entrance in a single glance. El Capitan's sheer face dominates the north wall, while Bridalveil Fall tumbles roughly 620 feet on the south side. Half Dome rises in the distance, its curved profile shifting with the season's light and weather.

Tunnel View rewards patience. Clearing storms produce dramatic cloud layers that roll through the valley, and alpenglow at dusk tints the granite in shades of pink and amber. Interpretive signs along the railing identify each landmark and offer geological context for the glacially carved landscape.

The overlook is accessible year-round and connects easily to nearby trailheads and valley shuttle stops, making Tunnel View a natural starting point for a deeper exploration of Yosemite.
