Liberty Station occupies the grounds of the former Naval Training Center San Diego, which operated from 1923 to 1997. The base trained hundreds of thousands of Navy recruits over its decades of service, and its Spanish Colonial Revival buildings remain remarkably intact today, lending the district a sense of history that newer developments rarely carry.

After the base closed, the city of San Diego partnered with developers to transform the site into a mixed-use cultural hub.
