Geologists place its origins in volcanic activity tens of millions of years ago, and the slow work of the Pacific has carved its distinctive opening, which frames the horizon like a window between two seas.
Because the arch sits at the junction of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez, the waters around it are some of the most biologically rich in Mexico. Boat tours circle the formation and pause at Pelican Rock, where California sea lions rest in noisy, photogenic clusters.
