Vikingsholm is a stunning Norse-inspired castle on the shores of Lake Tahoe in California, celebrated for its hand-carved woodwork, sod rooftops, and breathtaking alpine setting.
Vikingsholm was completed in 1929 as the summer home of Lora Josephine Knight, a wealthy widow who fell in love with Emerald Bay during a visit to Lake Tahoe. Inspired by Scandinavian architecture she had studied during travels in Norway and Sweden, Knight hired architect Lennart Palme, her nephew by marriage, to design a structure that would honor Norse building traditions without simply copying any single historical example. The result draws on styles spanning roughly a thousand years of Scandinavian design, unified by meticulous craftsmanship.
The exterior of Vikingsholm features thick granite walls, hand-hewn timber framing, and two sod rooftops planted with native wildflowers that bloom each summer. Carved dragon heads, a motif borrowed from Viking longships, project from the rooflines. Knight insisted that local artisans replicate period techniques wherever possible, and the interior reflects that commitment through hand-painted decorative motifs, wrought iron hardware, and furniture modeled on pieces Knight photographed in Scandinavian museums.
Visitors today reach Vikingsholm on foot via the Vikingsholm Trail, a well-maintained path that descends through mixed conifer forest to Emerald Bay State Park. Guided tours of the interior run through the summer months and offer a close look at the furnished great hall, bedrooms, and kitchen. The surrounding shoreline and the view across the bay toward Fannette Island, where Knight built a small stone teahouse, make the setting as memorable as the building itself.
For anyone drawn to architectural curiosity, California history, or simply remarkable landscapes, Vikingsholm offers a combination that is genuinely rare, a painstakingly crafted historic home set inside one of the most scenic corners of the Sierra Nevada.
Arrive at the Eagle Falls trailhead early in the morning, ideally before 9 a.m., as the parking lot fills quickly during summer weekends.
Wear sturdy shoes for the descent to Vikingsholm, as the trail drops roughly 500 feet and can be loose underfoot on the return climb.
Take a guided interior tour of Vikingsholm during the summer season to see the furnished rooms and learn the story of its builder, Lora Josephine Knight.
Bring a picnic and plan time on the small sandy beach beside Vikingsholm to take in the view of Fannette Island, the only island in Lake Tahoe.
Visit in late September or early October for smaller crowds and the added color of turning aspens along the trail.
