Fannette Island is Lake Tahoe's only natural island, tucked within Emerald Bay in California, and known for its stone tea house ruins and sweeping alpine views.
Fannette Island sits within Emerald Bay, a designated State Marine Conservation Area on the southwestern shore of Lake Tahoe in California. It is the only natural island in the lake, formed from ancient granite shaped by glacial activity thousands of years ago. The island's small size, steep profile, and isolated position have made it one of the most photographed landmarks along the entire Tahoe shoreline.
The stone structure at the summit is the remnant of a tea house built in the early twentieth century by Lora Josephine Knight, who also constructed the Scandinavian-style estate known as Vikingsholm on the nearby shore. Knight would host guests on the island for afternoon tea, reaching it by boat from her estate. The tea house walls still stand, though the roof is long gone, and the ruins carry a quiet historical weight that contrasts with the natural drama surrounding them.
Visitors reach Fannette Island by non-motorized watercraft, most commonly kayaks or canoes launched from Vikingsholm Beach within Emerald Bay State Park. The paddle is short but scenic, passing through water that shifts between deep teal and vivid green depending on depth and light. A scramble up the granite slope leads to the tea house and the summit viewpoint, where the full sweep of Emerald Bay and the surrounding Sierra Nevada opens up in every direction.
The island is closed to visitors during the winter and early spring to protect nesting birds, which gives the warmer months a particular appeal for those who want to explore this singular place. Fannette Island rewards the modest effort required to reach it with scenery and solitude that are rare even by the high standards of Lake Tahoe.
Visit during late spring or early summer when Emerald Bay State Park opens for the season and water conditions are calmer for the paddle out to the island.
Try kayaking from the state park launch at Vikingsholm Beach, as it offers the most direct and sheltered route to Fannette Island.
Bring water-resistant footwear, since landing on the island requires pulling a kayak onto rocky shoreline where footing can be slippery.
Arrive early in the morning to beat the afternoon winds that can pick up across Emerald Bay and make the return paddle more demanding.
Walk to the summit of the island to see the stone tea house ruins up close, as the structure is best appreciated from the top rather than the waterline.
